I had something similar, but I can't tell you that this is the correct answer.
When you're in mymaps.google.com and ready to export, you use the 3-dots next to the main title of the map and select "Export to KML/KMZ". Then in the new dialog box just below "Export to..." is a pull down that initially says "Entire Map"...pull that down and change it to the route your created, it should be one of the choices (probably the last one). The check the "Export as KML instead of...." box and download.
I missed changing the "Entire Map" thing and the files I downloaded were pretty much empty.
